![]() Nevertheless, " Junkers " was more technologically advanced-it was an all-metal structure made mainly of duralumin. That gap in terms of a rapid progress of aviation in the '30s of the last century seemed an eternity. A German plane was much older than a Soviet one – the designing of Ju 87 started in 1934 but IL-2-only in 1938. But the approaches to solving this task proved to be different. In fact, both aircrafts were conceived primarily as a means to support the Army in large-scale offensive operations-whether the Soviet " deep offensive operation " or the German " Blitzkrieg ". During their projecting the designers proceeded from completely different concepts – an armored battlefi eld aircraft, a kind of a " fl ying tank ", and a dive bomber primarily designed not for action over a battlefi eld but for attacking shallow objectives. The comparison of two such different planes as IL-2 and Ju 87 is quite diffi cult. On the Soviet-German front the task was entrusted mainly on the IL-2 attack planes from the Soviet side and Ju 87 dive bombers from the German side. The problem of providing air support to the Army was one of the determinative ones to achieve the success in operations of the Second World War. ![]()
